 Tanzania Live

You can spend around a hundred dollars for a one day hike on the side of one the most magnificent mountains in the world or you can spend close to a thousand for a six day trek to the snow capped summit. Kilimanjaro’s Uhuru Peak is nearly twenty thousand feet above sea level. Your trek will take you through a diverse range of ecologies. It is one of the few places in the world you can walk from a rain forest to an ice glacier in a matter of hours.

If you are on a budget you can find a room for less than ten dollars a night in one of the many guest houses around Arusha and head east out of town to Arusha National Park. While there are no big cats in this park, there are plenty of giraffe, elephant, zebra, buffalo, wilderbeast and other game to make the trip well worth the $35 park fee for non citizens. way back to town consider stopping at the Meru Game Lodge for a light lunch while you watch the ostrich, peacocks, zebra, monkeys, and other animals that roam the grounds just beyond the manicured lawns where your table is set up.

Or if you have more money to spend, you can stay at one of the higher end hotels in Arusha such as the New Arusha Hotel or the Impala. Maybe you want the tranquility of a coffee plantation or the convenience of a golf course? If so head out to the Impala’s sister hotel, the Ngurdoto Mountain Lodge, about thirty minutes outside of Arusha. But instead of spending all your money on a hotel, one of the overnight safaris. For example, you could drive out to Ngorogoro Crater and camp on the rim of the crater before heading down into the crater for a game drive that will blow your mind. Lions, zebra, flamingo, hyena, elephants, buffalo, zebra and if you are lucky, you might even catch a glimpse of the near extinct black rhino. The next day you can keep driving on into the Serengeti, the world’s most famous game park and home to herds of zebra, wilderbeast, and antelope that number in the tens of thousands.

Or maybe you want to stretch your dollar in the city? If so, enjoy the laid back dusty streets of Arusha, with its spectacular views of Mount Meru just beyond the city limits. At night enjoy a cool evening listening to music at any one of the numerous night spots.

But if you like bigger cities, try your hand in Dar es Salaam. During the day you can catch the ferry to the beautiful beaches across the bay, then return to the city in the evening for dinner at the Slipway, with the waves beating against the sides of the restaurants patio. Then head out to a nightspot where you can dance till dawn. Most clubs in Dar don’t really get jumping till well after midnight so if you need to kill some time between dinner and dancing, test your luck in one of the casinos.
